Facebook Keeps Removing Posts on News Feed
I found myself, as I'm sure many of you have, sitting at my desk one day, just aimlessly scrolling my Facebook Newsfeed. It was like I was in a trance. I had forgotten where I was, what I was doing and didn't recognize anything in my feed. No one looks the same anymore, people's last names have changed (I find this very annoying but that's for another post) or they were people I met once or twice in college.
What the fuck was I doing again? Oh yeah, coming on here to check MY BLOG PAGE. Not scroll a stupid feed of garbage.
That's usually how the conversation always went every time I hopped onto Facebook to check out something for the My Style Vita Facebook page.
So I decided to do something drastic and I am SO glad I did. I deleted my entire Newsfeed. Now you're probably wondering, Jessica, why didn't you just deactivate your Facebook? Trust me, I wish I could. But because My Style Vita is on Facebook and has 7k+ page likes, this wasn't an option. I actually at one point started a NEW Facebook so I'd have NO friends and just use it for the blog. Didn't work out well. Everyone I knew somehow still found me and the friend requests started to pour right in. Which also made me annoyed, don't these people know we're already friends?
Why I Was So Frustrated With Facebook
I've always been very anti-Facebook. I'm 32, so Facebook came out when I was a Senior in high school. I remember my friend coming back from college break and told us all about this Facebook thing. I couldn't wait to get to college to use my new school email address to sign up. That was the ONLY way to get on Facebook back then. And if you don't remember a time that only a college email worked, then I just feel old. When we used it, it was a way to connect with fellow students who you met, join groups, and stay in touch with friends who went away to college.
Fast forward to 2019 and this platform is just full of ads, parents posting dumb shit, friends sharing their pregnancy and new house announcements and then spamming all the terrible pics. Then came the 2017 election and I was beyond disgusted with humans. Don't even get me started. I hated the number of clickbait articles that were posted where no one cared to READ the article they were in fact sharing. I was annoyed with the immense amount of hatred for one side or the other. Especially hating an entire political group. It just seemed like a place to spew hate, random facts and articles and just complain. I was over it.
What I Did To Clear Out My Facebook Newsfeed
Since I was getting frustrated with my feed, I started to unfollow the super annoying people. They clearly DON'T know who they are. While I started to unfollow people, but remain friends with them, I wondered how I could just unfollow ALL of them. Sure I wanted to still stay in touch if they were actual friends. As in be reminded of birthdays, search their profile to see what's new, and so on. But I no longer wanted a damn Newsfeed. I didn't need it. It was wasting my time without me even realizing it. How could I unfollow everyone?
It's 100% possible. And let me tell you, game-changing.
How To Unfollow People On Facebook
You do not have to go to every friend and click "unfollow". All you have to do is head to the settings area in the top right corner and head to your News Feed Preferences.
Step One
Log into your Facebook account and head to the top right corner where your settings are. Click News Feed Preferences.
Step Two
Select "Unfollow People Or Groups"
Step Three
Select the people you want to unfollow. This does take some time, but it is MUCH faster than going through each profile. You just bulk select and click done. Voila, no more posts in your Facebook Newsfeed.
The reason why I do think it may be nice to keep Facebook but not your newsfeed is if friends still use this platform to invite you to events. Or if there's a particular brand you may want to follow for deals, or groups. Personally I still see my TRIM Bootcamp posts in my news feed, but that's IT.
The Benefit Of Not Having A Facebook News Feed
The number one benefit I instantly saw was a boost in productivity. Since I check my blog Facebook often, I wasn't falling victim to the Newsfeed I was forced to see before heading to my business page. I found myself no longer aimlessly scrolling and getting lost in the mix of posts, articles, baby photos and the like.
I also feel less stressed. Just like I unfollowed accounts that do NOT bring me joy on Instagram, I felt the same way about Facebook. There was a lot of "I'm not where I need to be in life because everyone is buying a house and getting married". Something I've been struggling with in terms of comparison the older I get. It helped my sanity. My comparison to others. Which is crucial to mental health.
It's also allowed me to actually catch up with friends in person. Something I've found interesting from being a blogger is that everyone kind of knows what I'm up to. Since I share so much, they know where I've been or any crazy projects I'm working on. So there's no need to really "catch up". The same goes for non-bloggers though. If you're posting about every detail of your life on the internet, what's there to catch up on in person? It also makes you feel like you're communicating with someone since you know what's going on with them. By leaving a few things to yourself and not sharing it all over the internet, it gives you something to chat about when you see your friends in person. Or oh I dunno, call them on the phone! What a concept.
Either way, you look at it, whether you want it for your sanity, for your productivity or just to stop wasting time, I'm so glad I no longer have a Facebook Newsfeed.
Would you ever try it?
